Lessard utilizes BIM, CAD and networks its graphic workstations with color laser and ink-jet plotters. By quantifying areas, our systems allow the design team to confirm program dimension and create links between mechanical, electrical, civil, structural and architectural drawings. Consequently, base plans need to be drawn only once, after which the BIM or CAD system provides checks for accuracy and coordination of the consultants’ work. It also increases productivity during a project’s Construction Documents phase. Additional computerized tools for project delivery include Microsoft Project, Microsoft Schedule, R.S. Means and Marshall Evaluation Service.
The addition of the Building Information Modeling process fundamentally changed the role of computation in Lessard architectural design. We now use BIM to produce a single, unified representation of a building so complete that it can generate all necessary documentation. Autodesk Revit, for instance, allows changes made in elevations to propagate automatically through every plan, section, callout, and rendering of the project. Using Revit, we take advantage of “I-information” in BIM, where we can compare programmatic data to projected data in a snap and make appropriate changes. A data-rich model means that more analysis and iterative searching (lower energy consumption, lower construction pricing, etc.) for optimal solutions occurs early in our design process. The entire process makes us more accurate and time-efficient during the entire lifecycle of the project.
We use visualization tools such as 3D Viz and 3D Max for modeling studies and virtual tours. Our graphic design presentation software includes Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Squiggle used during the early design stages for developing perspectives. These enable clients to fully visualize each design alternative.
